Integrated Command and Control Centers (ICCC), Smart City Control Room by Pyrotech Workspace

To understand ICCC i.e. Integrated Command and Control Centers, first, let’s understand the smart cities.

With increasing urbanization, mounting cost pressures & demand for improved quality of life there is a global move towards up-gradation of infrastructure consolidation & continuous improvement. By 2050 it is estimated that 70% of the human population will be shifted to the urban areas. It then becomes difficult to manage several areas such as public transport, traffic management, power & water supply, law enforcement service, school, hospital & more

ICCC as a platform through its different layers and components will act as a decision support system for the city administration to respond to the real-time events through:

  • Seamless integration between systems, sites, people & assets.
  • Improved operational efficiency.
  • Reduced energy cost.
  • Adherence to cyber security.

SMART CITIES HAVE Three FUNDAMENTAL LAYERS OF OPERATIONS:

  • Technological Layer: A large number of sensors & connected devices are used to provide a wide range of services

The technological layer of the smart city includes

  • IoT (Internet of things) – Sensors & internet-connected devices can communicate with each other & send data to management systems. Smart cities use IOT to collect data & to actively solve problems
  • ICT (Information & communication technology) – This platform is used to enable communication with the citizens. A smart city can use ICT to make changes in the city services by analyzing data & feedback from the citizens. This can be done by collecting data such as light pressure, temperature, number of vehicles, people, etc., with the help of sensors
  • Dedicated Applications – Information systems used by the city officials & citizens to improve city operations
  • Applications Usage – Implementation & usage of the applications inside the city by designated users

How does a city become a smart city?

A city becomes a “smart city” when data are collected from various administration departments such as public services, smart water management, traffic mobility, waste management, etc. & analyze mass quantities of the data from a wide network.

ICCC (Integrated Command and Control Centers.) is envisioned as the brain for the operation of the smart city which also includes handling deviations & disaster management. Integrated Command and Control Center’s major roles are:

  • Smart water network.
  • Intelligent traffic & transport management.
  • Waste management.
  • CCTV surveillance.
  • Street lighting.
  • Early warning system.
  • Air quality index.
  • Pollution control etc.

Three examples of city activities that can be smart are:

  1. Smart transport Improves traffic management through the use of navigation applications, smart cards & signal control systems. Smart transport technologies notify travelers about traffic, other road conditions, guide drivers to available parking spots & detect traffic accidents.
  2. Smart water & energy: Based on smart meters that gather data about water & energy demands & their uses. This data enables cities to regulate supplies.
  3. Smart Healthcare Improves healthcare & diagnosis through technology & smart devices. Smart sensors can detect air & water pollution before they turn into a public health hazard. Sensors can also collect data from the medical health facilities which helps in detecting the spread of diseases.

Data storage is of utmost importance to maintain the smart city functionality. It becomes easy to handle various departments of the municipality to ease out all the handles related to the citizens’ safety and comfort.

So how does the data impact smart city?

  • Public Safety: Security is the most important task that any city or the smart city needs to observe. The information analysis helps to identify the crime and exact crime location. The historical and geographical data help cities to create a much safer environment.
  • Transportation and road pricing: More development, more chaos. Road traffic congestion is recognized as a growing and important urban ill which affect both work & non-work trips as well as the goods flow. When implemented properly, it virtually never fails to be an effective tool to restrain congestion. The analyzed data can uncover patterns that help reduce traffic congestion & help authorities implement data-driven road enhancement. It can cost cities millions of revenue.
  • Cost Reduction: Cities invest a lot of money in transforming a city into a smart city. These investments can be either for remodeling or renovation. Analysis of big data can suggest which areas require transformation & what kind of transformation. As a result, cities can make dedicated investments for the required areas.

Apart from this smart cars data, camera system data, environmental sensor data are also important.

The functionality of ICCC – It develops integrated control rooms & consoles that work on analytics such as:

  1. Descriptive (Business) Analytics: This explains what happened?
  2. Diagnostic Analytics: This helps us to analyze why did it happen?
  3. Predictive Analytics: It raises a question that explains what will happen.
  4. Prescriptive Analytics: How can we make it happen?
  5. Sentiment Analytics: It is the use of the natural language processing text analysis which includes social media monitoring, customer support, customer feedback, brand monitoring & reputation management, the voice of customers, product analysis & market research.
  6. Video Analytics: This is the capability of automatically analyzing video to detect & determine temporal and spatial events.

If we scan any smart city then it is evident that it is built on technology, as it is the key element but the focus is on the outcome, hence the focus is on building control rooms and consoles integrated with technology that fulfills the demand as per the smart city norms, attaining fulfillment. ICCC enables the following characteristics like

  • Smart Technology.
  • Smart Mobility.
  • Smart Environment.
  • Smart People.
  • Smart Living & eventually a Smart Governance.

We at Pyrotech workspace solutions envision a smart city as the one that brings together technology, government & society and provide the stakeholders with comfort & support:

Smart controlling: Smart controlling includes an infrastructure based around technology, environmental initiatives, effective and highly functional public transportation, confident progressive city plans & people able to live and work within the city, using its resources. These resources can be broken into

  1. Collection: Smart sensors gather real-time data
  2. Analysis: The data is analyzed to gain insights into the operation of city services and operations
  3. Communication: The results of the data analysis are communicated to decision-makers
  4. Action: Action is taken to improve operations, manage assets and improve the quality of city life for the residents

  • Sustainability: Smart city technologies have a high and large potential to improve quality of life. The idea behind smart cities is to use technology and data deliberately to take better decisions delivering a better quality of life. Beyond safety, time, health, connectivity, cost of living, etc. this needs building a traditional physical and social infrastructure. Smart applications and data analysis are used as alerts and actions. Smart applications contribute most to environmental improvements such as energy, water, waste & air quality management.
  • Health & Wellness: Smart cities propose ingenious means of proactively addressing health & wellness. It lends relief to an already fatigued healthcare system. The healthcare system is the one that faces ever-increasing demands & quality expectations in continued urbanization which has an ever-increasing rate of an aging population and with every climate change the risks keep on increasing, eventually affecting the healthcare costs.
  • Mobility: Transportation plays an important role in the form of mobility. Hence traffic & transit management is very important for the smooth flow of the traffic without any hindrance making people & goods reach on time.
  • Quality of Life: Standards of living, satisfaction & happiness are the major factors affecting the urban quality of life. This includes improving public safety, making daily commutes faster, better public health, cleaner sustainable environments, enhancing social connectedness, etc.
