Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project:
Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project (720MW) is one amongest the ten hydroelectric Projects planned under the 10,000MW hydropower development by the year 2020 programmme of Royal Government of Bhutan supported by the Government of India. An agreement for execution of Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project was signed between the two governments on 30th April 2010 at the approved cost of Nu./Rs. 33821.58 million (March 2008 price level) to be funded by GoI(Govt of India) as 30% grant and 70% loan at 10% annual interest to be paid in thirty equated semiannual installments. The tentative project cost has now become Nu. /Rs. 38006.90 million. The Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority was subsequently constituted on 8th June 2010. The Authority comprises of Chairperson and four members nominated by the Royal Government of Bhutan and three members nominated by the Government of India. The Project Management is headed by the Managing Director, who is being assisted by a Joint Managing Director, Director (Technical) and Director (Finance). NHPC Limited, a Central Public Sector Undertaking of GoI(Govt of India) is the Design and Engineering consultant to the Project. The project is scheduled for commissioning by September-2017.
PROJECT SALIENT FEATURES:
The 720 MW Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project is located on river Mangdechhu in Trongsa Dzongkhag (District) in Central Bhutan. The project envisages construction of one Concrete Gravity Dam (Height 56m above the river bed, length at Top 141.28m, Top width 10m); one Diversion Tunnel (dia. 8.5m, length 670m); 4 nos. Spillway (orifice type, 70m long, the width of each bay s10m); 2 nos. Intake Tunnels (5m x 5m length 126 & 173m); 2 nos. Desilting Chamber (width 14m, height 17.7m and 340m long); one HRT (Horse shoe type, dia. 6.5m, length 13561m); one Surge Shaft (dia. 13.5m, Height 152m); 2 nos. Pressure Shaft (steel lined, Dia 3.5m, length 1856m each); 4 nos. Penstock (dia. 2.5m, length 63m each); Underground Power House (size 155m x 23m x 41m, and 135m x 18m x 23m GIS, Pelton Turbine, Rated Head 692m; TRT (Horseshoe shape, dia. 8m, length 1295m). The power evacuation of the project has been planned through 400 kV Mangdechhu-Jigmeling via. Goling Transmission Line. The annual energy generation from the Project with 95% machine availability would be 2925.25 MU.
